General Information Pertaining To Insurance Coverage
Please read this information carefully as it may save you a lot of money in the event of a cancellation.
Deluxe Package Insurance covers you for emergency medical costs you may incur while on your trip; it also covers for any cancellation penalties you may be required to pay in the event that you have booked and paid for everything, and then can't go due to an unexpected medical reason. The key word is "unexpected"... the insurance will not cover for existing medical situations, or if you simply change your mind and don't want to go. In addition, the insurance will also cover you if someone in your immediate family becomes ill due to unexpected medical reasons, and this prevents you from travelling. (Note: In general, you must be a resident of Canada and have coverage under a Provincial Health Plan in order to be eligible for coverage of emergency medical costs provided by this insurance).
Examples of cancellation penalties you may be required to pay
The non-refundable portion of an airline ticket, once you have paid. (The ticket can carry a non-refundable penalty anywhere from $50.00 to the full value of the ticket).
Your hotel accommodation may carry cancellation fees that have to be paid in the event that you cancel the reservation.
If you book a "package" that provides air, hotel and transfers, there are cancellation amounts that apply from the moment of booking, and these amounts increase as you get closer to the date of departure. Penalties can range from the initial deposit amount, up to the full cost of your holiday. You are responsible to pay these fees if you book and then do not travel. It is important to read the "fine print" pertaining to cancellation charges, in a brochure or pamphlet, when you buy a "package" holiday.
Scenario 1:
You did not buy insurance coverage.
If you break your arm and don't go on your trip, you lose the amount of the penalty set out by the airline, hotel, or Tour Operator.
If you have purchased insurance, coverage will kick-in and the insurance company will reimburse the value of the penalty amount that has been assessed against you.
Note that the insurance company requires proper medical documentation to verify that a claim is legitimate.
Scenario 2 :
If you just decide not to go and cancel out because you don't feel like going, you forfeit the air, hotel, or package cancellation penalty amounts as the case may be.
The insurance will not cover in this case.
Scenario 3:
If there is a death in the immediate family and if you have purchased insurance, coverage will kick-in and the insurance company will reimburse the value of the penalty amount that has been assessed against you.
Note that the insurance company may require documentation
If you have not purchased insurance coverage and you have to cancel, your pre-paid travel arrangements are 100% non-refundable.
As mentioned, Deluxe Package Insurance covers for emergency medical costs while on your trip. It also covers for the following:
1.) Transportation of a deceased insured back to the point of origin
2.) Subsistence (daily living) allowance if you can't return as scheduled due to unexpected medical reasons
3.) Cancellation penalties that may be levied by airlines, hotels and other suppliers
4.) Flight accident insurance (if the plane crashes)
5.) Travel accident insurance during your trip (eg: if the taxi taking you to the hotel is involved in an accident and you are injured)
6.) Baggage and personal effects insurance (usually covers up to a total amount of $1000.00, subject to a maximum value of $500.00 for any one item or set of items)
7.) If necessary, the cost of a one-way airline ticket back to the point of origin if you can't return as scheduled due to an insured peril; or the airline's fee to make a change to your travel date so you can return home as required
Break down the cost of insurance for your trip into a per-day price, and you'll see that it is economical coverage that also buys you peace of mind.
Non-medical Package Insurance covers for all of 1.) to 7.) above, in addition to non-refundable cancellation penalties that may be levied. This coverage does not include hospitalization expenses or emergency medical costs, and is recommended only for those who already have out-of-country medical insurance coverage.
What About Insurance Coverage Through My Credit Card ?
Please check directly with your credit card company as to what coverage they do, or do not, provide as they are in the best position to interpret their agreement with you. In most cases, their liability is limited and trip cancellation (penalties levied by an airline, hotel or other supplier) or trip interruption (such as the cost of a one-way fare back to your city of origin; or the penalty levied by an airline to make a change to the return travel date of your ticket) is seldom covered. You may also want to ask about your credit card company's definition of "immediate family member," and whether or not the company provides assistance with the paying of any expenses up front.
The above information is intended for explanation / clarification purposes only and, in the event of a claim, the wording and/or terms and conditions contained in the insurance company's policy will take precedence.
Please note : We require your birth date if you want us to issue any insurance coverage for you.
