Manitoba Canoe Expeditions

7-days on the Pigeon River

8-days on the Bloodvein River

General information

7-days on the Pigeon River
The Pigeon is one of Manitoba's finest wilderness whitewater rivers with over 50 rapids and some spectacular falls. It flows through a rugged Precambrian Shield landscape dotted by pristine lakes. Our descent carries us through an exciting and challenging 40 Km long whitewater section that is comparable to Colorado's Snake River.

Approaching Lake Winnipeg the rugged boreal forest gives way to a tranquil marsh. Your trip ends with a flight to Matheson Island by air charter.

Cost: on request

Skill level: Some whitewater canoeing experience required

7 Day Pigeon River Expedition - Detailed Itinerary

Trip Dates: On request. This trip requires some paddling experience.

Pre-trip: You should arrive in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada a minimum of 1 day before your trip starts. We will deliver your waterproof barrel to your hotel the day that you arrive. At this time we will answer any questions and notify you of your departure time. Hotel guests will be able to leave suitcases or backpacks at the hotel free of charge.

Day 1: We will pick you up at your hotel and will drive from Winnipeg to the float plane base and fly into the Pigeon River via float plane

Day 2-6: Guests begin their trip with necessary canoe instruction and a river safety talk. The Pigeon River flows through a rugged, remote Precambrian Shield landscape. The rapids are usually class 2-4 (with many big water class 3). A 40 km long "canyon" contains over 30 rapids that have been compared with Colorado's best whitewater rivers. Rapids culminate in a rollercoaster ride on large standing waves at the end of the rapids. Bears, moose and an abundance of baldheaded eagles and golden eagles make this river trip an absolute delight.

Day 7: A float plane will meet us on the river and fly us back to our vehicles. We drive back to Winnipeg that evening.

8-days on the Bloodvein River
If you have limited time but want to experience this magnificent heritage river by air and water this 8 day trip is ideal. We begin by flying into Kautunigan Lake on the Bloodvein River. The following days are spent exploring the pristine, powerful Bloodvein River. The seventh day of our journey brings us to the Bloodvein First Nation where we will participate in a sweat lodge ceremony and be treated to a traditional meal.

We'll then be ferried past the limestone cliffs and expansive vistas of Lake Winnipeg, one of Canada's most beautiful and largest lakes.

8 day Bloodvein River Trip - Detailed Itinerary
Suitable for beginners and more experienced canoeists as all rapids are easily portaged. We will deliver your waterproof barrel to your hotel the day that you arrive. At this time we will answer any questions and notify you of your departure time. Hotel guests will be able to leave suitcases or backpacks at the hotel free of charge.

Day 1: We will pick guests up at your hotel and will drive from Winnipeg to the float plane base and fly into Artery Lake via float plane. Stay at Artery Lake on the first night so you can see one of western Canada's best pictograph sites.

Days 2-6: Your journey on one of Canada's premier Heritage Rivers starts with a chance to learn or practice some whitewater paddling skills and whitewater safety. The Bloodvein River flows through rugged terrain, through deep gorges and appears barely trodden. Paddle past ancient pink granite cliffs, find out how the river got it name, see pictographs painted hundreds of years ago, and camp at the most spectacular campsites that you can imagine. The unmistakable illustration of a moose signals the near completion of your fantastic journey on the Bloodvein River.

Day 7: A sweat lodge ceremony will begin shortly after you arrive at the Bloodvein River First Nations community. You will have a chance to chat with your hosts as they prepare for the ceremony and describe what will take place. Enter the lodge and be treated to a ceremony that few outside people take part in. After the ceremony, which lasts from two to three hours, a feast will be served. The incredible traditions of the first nations peoples are opened slightly for your understanding and participation.

Day 8: Take a ferry from Bloodvein River First Nation across Lake Winnipeg and return to Winnipeg. Arrive at your hotel approximately 6:00pm.

If you have special needs that you would like us to consider, for example, a larger group size on one trip, give us a call or contact us for more information.
